Rajkumar Hirani’s directorial Sanju releases this Friday and it would unveil the controversial life of Sanjay Dutt. His life was no less than a roller-coaster ride. He has witnessed everything a person could ever imagine from serving time in jail to getting involved with the underworld, from taking drugs to leaving drug addiction and spending time in rehabilitation centers. The actor not just witnessed, but lived through it all. The most controversial and the most talked about event of his life remains his severe drug addiction.
Even prior to his biopic, Sanjay Dutt revealed and admitted about his drug addiction in many interviews.
Hirani’s Sanju will shed light on the aspects of the actor’s life that we don’t know about.
He started using drugs after he lost his mother due to cancer. He himself referred his drug phase as “nine years of hell”. The movie will discuss that in detail. Here we present some of the drug tales of the actor’s life.
1. Enablers
The fact that he was addicted to drugs never remained a secret in the iIndustry. There was even a phase when Sunil Dutt started warning producers about Sanjay’s drug addiction before they start working with him. Reportedly, some producers who wanted to work with him even arranged drugs for him so that the shoot is not delayed.
2. Pushing Sister Namrata Dutt
Drugs not only hurt the person taking them, but everyone connected to him. The actor was so high on drugs that he pushed his own sister Namrata. The push was so hard that Namrata’s toe was fractured.
3. First Arrest
In 1982, he was arrested for the first time for taking drugs. He spent five months in jail for drug possession.
4. Sleeping for Two Days
Sanjay used to lock himself in his room whenever he used to take drugs at home. It was once after a drug bender, he woke up after two days. He was feeling starved and so, called the house helpers who started crying in front of him. When asked, they told that Sanju hadwoken up from sleep after two days.
5. Ticked all the boxes
Soon after, Sunil Dutt decided to send him to a rehabilitation center in USA, Texas. Sanjay was asked to fill a form in which in one of the columns he was supposed to tick the boxes for the variety of drugs he has used. Surprisingly, Sanjay ended up ticking all the boxes. The doctor got puzzled and even said that it was a miracle that Sanjay is still alive.
6. Maharani of Sadak
During his drug phase, he used to visit the chawls of Mumbai where he met a transgender. He told Mahesh Bhatt about the transgender and they decided to cast transgender in the character of Maharani, the villain of the film. Sadashiv Amprapurkar who portrayed the role of Maharani in Sadak received a lot of appreciation and was even honoured with a Filmfare Award for the same.
