There is a good news for all women aspirants who are looking to serve the nation by joining the Indian Army. Prime Minister Narendra Modi as announced that Women Will Get Permanent Commission like Male Officers. During his speech at Red Fort On Independence Day, he said, “I want to give good news to our brave daughters. Women officers who have been selected through the short service commission in our defence forces will get the opportunity for a permanent commission.”
PM Modi also said that the decision would be implemented through a transparent selection process.
The announcement came after the Centre told the Supreme Court in April that it was considering to grant permanent commission to SSC (Short Service Commission) to women in Indian Army. If this comes into action, it will end an eight-year-long battle in Supreme court.
Defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman thanked PM Modi on Twitter.
Captain Shalini Singh who served the Army from 2002 to 2008 said that this move will empower the women in defense forces. She said, “When we are wearing the uniform, there is no difference between men and women. Women discharge their duties like male officers do. It’s an excellent move.”
Women are permanently commissioned in Indian Navy and Indian Air Force in selective streams.
Indian Army officers serve for a term of 5 years which can be extended to 10 to 14 years. Permanent Commission allows them to serve till retirement. Currently, the India Army allows women officers for permanent commissions in 2 streams- Education and Judge Advocate General (JAG).
We appreciate this step taken by the government. This is a true example of women empowerment.
