New Delhi: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Wednesday ordered the suspension of internet facilities in the violence-hit Kashmir valley for a period of one month or until further order, the PTI reported.
The home department, in an order, said that internet services in Kashmir valley shall not be transmitted for a period of one month or till further orders.
The state home department invoked powers conferred on it under Indian Telegraph Act and Information Technology Act to suspend the internet services, the officials said.
It was not immediately clear whether the order pertains to all internet services or just the mobile internet services, which are already suspended since April 17.
The mobile internet services in Kashmir were snapped last Monday following widespread student protests in the valley against alleged highhandedness of security forces.
The move comes amidst disturbances in Kashmir, which the authorities believe are fanned through social media. A number of videos circulated on social media over the past few months and sparked outrage from all quarters.
One such video purportedly showed a protester kicking in the shins of a CRPF jawan, who despite being armed, walked away without any response.
In the following days, another video, showing a protester tied to the bumper of a jeep, made its way to social media, eliciting a widespread criticism.
The state has been simmering in violence ever since the Hizbul Mujahideen commander, Burhan Wani, was killed in an encounter by the Indian army in 2016.
